I made this marker entirely with hand tools, flattening a rough slab of granite and incising the letters. It has served as my address plaque for a decade, and is destined to eventually become my headstone.
On a recent rainy day, I recently noticed a lichenous growth on it. I hadn't seen this before, partly because the lichen is still in its infancy and quite small, partly because when dry it is almost the same color as the stone beneath it.
I had imagined that it would take decades for any lichens to appear. I am somehow happy to see it starting now. The current species is probably Physcia thomsoniana, but my observation is that once one sort of lichen establishes a toehold, others are likely to follow suit.
