Notes for Mary J. Lloyd
There is little doubt that Mary J. Lloyd’s mother was the Mary J. Lloyd shown in the 1850 census.347 The names speak for themselves. The question of paternity isn’t so obvious, since Thomas Lloyd’s spouse Catharina Uplinger was alive at the time Mary J. (the younger) was born. Of interest, the 1880 census2231 reports that her father was born in New York and mother in New Jersey, while her husband’s father was born in England and mother in New Jersey. I think this has the spouses’ parents transposed. Under this logic, Mary J.’s mother would have been born in New Jersey and father in England, which matches other records. It also makes sense for George Crane’s parents, since he was born in Paterson, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City.
