In 1797, Joseph took Robert Moore, “a base-born child of Hannah Moore,” seven years old, as an apprentice until the age of twenty-one. He undertook to care for Robert, to teach him to read and write and cypther to the rule of three, to train him in the trade and business of weaving, and to see to his religious understanding.2127
