Notes for Erik Persson
The roots of the Nordberg name are here. At this time in Sweden, people’s last names were just those of their fathers, in this case Per’s = Peter’s son. Since there were a small number of common given names, there could be any number of persons with the same pair of names. In a small village, this would not be likely to create particular confusion. In the army, however, it was problematic. To resolve the ambiguities, commanders gave soldiers’ names. Erik’s soldier’s name was Berg = mountain, hill, or mine. Perhaps he was from the north side of Prästholm, suggesting norr or nord = north. Hence, Norberg or Nordberg in Swedish, which accepted variants much more than we are used to in modern English.159
